Debt collectors are pursuing nearly $33 million in unpaid seatbelt fines which have increased following new cameras on the roads and higher fines, and a spokesperson insists it's about saving lives, not making money.

The value of those outstanding debts also climbed by more than 450 per cent during the same period, from $5.9 million in June 2021 to $32.97 million in June 2023. In the first year of the new speeding fine penalties, the value of outstanding speeding fines sitting on SPER's books increased from $251.53 million to $262.94 million.
