Russia has destroyed the largest power plant in Ukraine in a devastating barrage of missile attacks.
Substations and generation facilities in multiple Ukraine regions were targeted by 82 Russia n rockets and drones and Ukraine shot down about one third.The Trypilska thermal power plant , which is the largest supplier of electricity to Kyiv and other regions, was “completely destroyed” energy provider Centrenergo confirmed.He said everything had been destroyed, “the transformer, the turbines, the generators. They destroyed 100 per cent”.
The war began in February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine and seized territory in eastern Ukraine and Crimea.Russian President Vladimir Putin said that recent air strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid, which have caused huge blackouts, were part of the Kremlin’s “demilitarisation” of its neighbour. Putin said the strikes were also in response to Kyiv targeting Russia’s energy infrastructure, including oil refineries, as the conflict drags on into its third year.
