Unswaddling my baby granddaughter made me think of Lazarus rising from the dead | Carol Frost

Recently I had the experience of unswaddling my baby granddaughter after a sleep. Layers upon layers of soft cloth enveloped her tiny frame. I peeled them away like tissue paper revealing a present – her torso, limbs, fingers and toes. Quicksilver smiles greeted me and I thought of the folds of brain tissue producing them – and the amount of energy and personality compressed into one small body.

But we also see the devastation wrought when a baby or child dies. We understand that those who lose a child are inconsolable at the thought of never really knowing them or seeing them develop fully. When they try to find words to describe the essence of their loss. There are never enough. We are less appreciative of the layers of growth present in our adult selves.

Christ understood this need when he raised his cousin Lazarus from the dead and restored him to his family. We can imagine his sisters loosening the shroud from Lazarus’ limbs and taking him home. How wonderful to be given another go at life –- another chance to really talk and listen to those we love. We would hope the relatives of Lazarus would have sat him down and given him the best of care – enough so that when death came for him a second time, there was nothing unsaid or undone.
