Conte gained national attention after it was discovered that he was allegedly involved in the orchestrated effort to provide several professional athletes in track & field and baseball with an undetectable form of performance-enhancing drugs.

He became suspicious of BALCO's activities when he realized a discrepancy between what BALCO said they were doing versus what they actually did. BALCO had described itself as a blood-testing facility but was actually providing athletes with game-changing performance-enhancing drugs.
As described in Untold: Hall of Shame, Arnold combined a unique blend of hydrogen and a birth control pill to essentially make a brand-new type of undetectable anabolic steroid. Conte also later acquired a cream version of the anabolic steroid from Arnold that could be applied topically through the skin. Conte had previously been trying to sell nutritional products under a brand he created called SNAC, which developed into his popular vitamin brand ZMA.
