When Cerquera helped pitch the garden to the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation board in 2019, more than 1-in-10 people in Cleveland were Hispanic. “I want to do something good for my country, and I also want people from other countries,” says Cerquera. “We have Mexico and Peru gardens coming. I want them to come and feel something with us. I feel proud that we are seeing more Hispanic and Latin American countries.”The Landmarks Commission approved the schematic designs of the Colombian garden in 2022 at the same time it did the Lebanese and Romanian gardens.
The Cleveland Cultural Gardens represent the different waves of immigration patterns throughout Cleveland’s history. The first Hispanic and Latin garden indicates the growing population from those countries and how important Cleveland is as a place to emigrate to.
