A rural psychologist says an impasse between state and federal governments means residents on the Upper Eyre Peninsula are missing out on Medicare rebates.
Residents on South Australia's Upper Eyre Peninsula are unable to access Medicare rebates for allied health services , including mental health care.A bureaucratic impasse has meant people on the Upper Eyre Peninsula have been unable to access Medicare rebates for allied health care, including mental health services, for the past six months.
The stalemate has meant individuals in Cleve, Cowell, Kimba, Elliston and Coober Pedy have not been able to access the same Medicare services that the rest of Australia has access to. Since October, Dr Rogers has written to politicians including SA Health Minister Chris Picton, Premier Peter Malinauskas, and Federal Minister for Health and Aged Care Mark Butler, lobbying for urgent action on behalf of her clients.Much of the Upper Eyre Peninsula is serviced by locum doctors, paid for by SA Health.
"The Department is now undertaking the required updates to legislation, and I have asked the department to expedite this process," Mr Butler said in the letter.In Cleve, where Dr Rogers is located, residents have been required to see a GP in a different area to receive a mental health care plan, in order to receive a rebate."Every other Australian gets to see their regular GP that they trust.
State Shadow Minister for Mental and Regional Health Services Penny Pratt said she was disappointed with the lack of action and accused Labor of playing "dodgeball" with regional South Australia's mental health.
