A vital technique for prompt engineering entails thinking ahead and telling generative AI what kind of response you are expecting to get. Here is the insider scoop.

With the above as an overarching perspective, we are ready to jump into today’s discussion. The best way to show you how to do a target-for-response technique is by walking you through the myriad of ways that such efforts are performed.

The last one on the list is a special technique that I refer to as mix-and-match. I didn’t put this into alphabetized order because I find that people tend to overlook it there. By having it as the last item, albeit out of alphabetical order, it seems like people are more apt to give it proper attention. This is especially the case because the mix-and-match is a reminder that you can combine the rest of the approaches into a single prompt.

Caveats: One notable disturbing concern is that the AI app might devise alternative viewpoints that otherwise don’t especially matter, doing so as an attempt to appease your request. Be cautious.: The default by most generative AI is to provide outputs that are relatively well-written and generally matter-of-fact. You can try to uplift this further. Suppose you have asked for an essay and want it to be beautified in the sense of being especially polished and embellished.

Caveats: A slew of problems arise with asking for citations. First, the citations might be made up by the AI app and yet appear to be real, see my coverage at Caveats: The code generated by the AI app might not do what you’ve asked to do. The code might also contain errors or bugs. Nowadays, be very suspicious of any code generated by AI and make sure to closely examine and test the code. Buyer beware.: Generative AI is data-trained on millions upon millions of sentences and billions of words, most of which have been written by humans. The AI maker has tried to ensure that the patterns devised based on human writing will present coherent outputs.

Caveats: Sometimes the AI app will catch on to a conversation and automatically provide complex answers. This can happen by pattern matching on the wording of your prompts. Thus, you might not need to explicitly tell the AI to switch to a higher level of complexity.: Much of the time, generative AI will provide an answer to the direct question or entered problem that you provided in your prompt.

Caveats: Please realize that you are dialoguing with a machine. I emphasize this because the conversational capabilities are so immersive that you can start to falsely believe you are interacting with a sentient being. You are not.: If I ask for an indication about the life of Lincoln, you never know what you might get in terms of the AI being succinct or verbose. This is true of nearly any inquiry. When you know that you want to have an elaborate response, just say so in your prompt.

Example prompt excerpt: “I want to engage in a dialogue and ask that you converse in a very formal manner with me.” Example prompt excerpt: “Let’s discuss the making of grits and do so with you adopting a southern accent.”
