A US Air Force F-35 fighter jet crashed during a training exercise in Alaska, causing significant damage but thankfully no serious injuries to the pilot. The pilot ejected safely and was taken to a medical facility. The US Air Force is investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred during the landing phase.
A US Air Force F-35 fighter jet crashed and caught fire following a training exercise at a base in Alaska . The pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft and was reported to be safe after being transported to a medical facility. According to Colonel Paul Townsend, commander of the 354th Fighter Wing, the plane encountered an 'in-flight malfunction'. The impact occurred near the airfield during the landing phase, after the aircraft had been airborne for some time.
The pilot declared an in-flight emergency prior to the crash. An unverified video circulating on social media appears to show the crash, depicting the pilot descending in a parachute alongside the fighter jet, which spirals downwards. Colonel Townsend stated that the plane was conducting a training mission but declined to elaborate on its specifics. He confirmed that the pilot had declared an in-flight emergency before the crash and was in stable condition, undergoing evaluation at a medical facility. The crash, which took place early Tuesday afternoon, resulted in significant damage to the aircraft, as confirmed by a statement released by the US Air Force. Colonel Townsend emphasized in the statement that the air force would conduct a thorough investigation to minimize the likelihood of similar incidents in the future. He stressed the importance of personnel safety and security as a top priority. Eielson Air Force Base, located approximately 40 kilometers south of Fairbanks, was chosen in 2016 to host 54 F-35s, leading to an expansion that included 36 new buildings and numerous housing units. As of July 2024, the average flyaway cost per US Air Force F-35 Lightning II fighter jet is approximately $US102.1 million ($160 million). The pilot, whose identity has not been disclosed by the Marine Corps, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has been discharged from the hospital. The F-35, capable of flying for over 12 hours, can reach virtually any location within the Northern Hemisphere on a single mission. Notably, in May of the previous year, an F-35 fighter jet en route from Texas to Edwards Air Force Base near Los Angeles crashed after the pilot made a refueling stop in New Mexico. In October, a Marine investigation attributed the crash of an F-35 to the pilot ejecting from the aircraft unnecessarily, causing the fighter to fly unmanned for 11 minutes before it ultimately crashed
