The Pentagon is urgently investigating the leak of NATO and the United States' secret plans to help Ukraine's planned counteroffensive against Russia, as officials scramble to delete the document circulating social media.
The New York Times broke the news on Friday morning following confirmation from officials in the Biden Administration.
Military analysts said the documents, which were posted to Twitter and Telegram as photographs, appear to have been modified from their original format in places, leading some to suggest they were being used as part of a disinformation campaign. Sabrina Singh, the deputy press secretary at the Pentagon, told the New York Times they were"aware of the reports of social media posts and the department is reviewing the matter."
There are no specific battle plans contained in the leak, such as when, where or how Ukraine plans to launch its counteroffensive, and it only offers a snapshot of what American and Ukrainian planners believe would be required as of March 1. The US has not said publicly how fast Ukraine is burning through its supply of the rockets, but the leaked documents do.
They also warned that any information shared by Russian sources was likely to have been altered to suit the Kremlin's aims of spreading misinformation. The US has appeared well ahead of Russia since the start of the invasion, gathering and sharing high quantities of intel with Ukraine and its allies.
