A top Iranian military general was among seven people killed in a US airstrike at Baghdad's international airport, according to the Pentagon. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said General Qassim Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite Quds Force, and Abu Mahdi al Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilisation Forces , died in the attack.
The Pentagon said the US military carried out the airstrikes at the direction of President Donald Trump. "This strike was aimed at deterring future Iranian attack plans," the Pentagon said in a statement. US officials told Reuters news agency that strikes were carried out against two targets linked to Iran in Baghdad on Thursday night. At least three rockets were fired at the airport, Iraqi security officials have said.
