U.S., U.K., Australia press Facebook to give law enforcement a way to read encrypted messages sent by users.

FILE - In this July 23, 2019 file photo U.S. Attorney General William Barr addresses the International Conference on Cyber Security at Fordham University in New York. Attorney General William Barr wants Facebook to give law enforcement a way to read encrypted messages sent by users, re-igniting tensions between tech companies and law enforcement.

But the officials will ask Facebook to hold off in an open letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. A copy of the latter, dated this Friday, was obtained by The Associated Press. The letter marks yet another salvo in the Justice Department’s continuing effort to push technology companies to provide law enforcement with access to encrypted devices and applications during investigations.
