Australia’s former US Ambassador Joe Hockey says while he supports Kevin Rudd’s ongoing position in the role, he believes there are “lessons to be learned” by the Albanese government from the American election. Rudd has previously called Trump “nuts” and a “traitor to the West”, resulting in the now president-elect calling the former Australian prime minister “nasty” and “not the brightest bulb”.
“I think it’s in Australia’s interest that stays until such time as there’s cause otherwise. Donald Trump doesn’t forget, but he does forgive. It’s a question of what we are going to do on the relationship going forward – how we manage it.” But Hockey said the US election demonstrated voters were willing to boot a first-term government. “The first lesson is that it’s very hard to be an incumbent.
