Robert De Niro has branded Donald Trump a “clown” who will become a “dictator for life” if he is re-elected, in a speech outside the court where the former president is standing trial. De Niro, a longtime political activist and critic of Trump, said when he ran in 2016 “it was like a joke”. “We have a second chance, and no one is laughing now,” De Niro said. “This is the time to stop him.
Michael Tyler, the Biden campaign’s communications director, defended the decision to stage a political event at the courthouse steps on Tuesday, describing the media coverage of the trial as “incessant” and telling reporters “since you all are here, we’re here”. Along with De Niro, Tyler was joined by two police officers who were attacked while defending the US Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters on January 6, 2021.
