The Australian Open will be without one of the brightest stars in world tennis, with US Open champion Bianca Andreescu pulling out of the year's first grand slam with a knee injury.
The last woman to win a tennis major will not be competing at this year's Australian Open, with Bianca Andreescu succumbing to a knee injury.She withdrew from the season-opening Auckland Classic in hope of recovering in time for the Australian OpenCanada's world number six picked up the injury at the WTA Finals, won by Ash Barty, and had already pulled out of a tournament in Auckland in the hope of resting up for the year's first major.
"My rehab is going well, I feel better and stronger every day, but after discussing it with my team and following the recommendation of the doctors, the Australian Open is unfortunately too soon in my rehab process and I sadly will not be able to play in it this year," Andreescu wrote on Instagram. She won her first WTA tour title at Indian Wells, before beating Serena Williams in Andreescu's hometown of Toronto, and then again in New York to clinch her maiden grand slam title.
