The White House says it expects more military provocation from China and is preparing to sail and fly its own defence forces in the Taiwan Straight.
in response to Taiwan accepting a visit from Ms Pelosi. Ms Pelosi was the highest-ranking elected American official to visit Taiwan since then-Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1997.as well as warships into the Taiwan Straight and around the island, conducting live fire drills and war games.
“We’ve reinforced our iron clad alliances as we did on August 9, with a joint Air Force exercise with Japan near Okinawa. We continue to support Taiwan and our partners, many of which, the G7, Australia, the UK, the EU and ASEAN have also expressed concern in public statements.
“The Taiwan Relations Act requires us to provide appropriate defensive articles and capabilities to Taiwan. Those articles are designed to most effectively engage on defence issues that are related to the evolving security circumstances that Taiwan faces. And so, the kinds of things that you describe, are indeed taken into our calculus. And you will see that going forward.”
However, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said it was not “wise” for Speaker Pelosi to go.
