US President Donald Trump is set to win acquittal from impeachment, hours after his partisan State of the Union speech triggered unprecedented protests from Democrats in a seething display of political divisions.

President Donald Trump was set to win acquittal from impeachment on Wednesday, hours after his partisan State of the Union speech triggered unprecedented protests from Democrats in a seething display of US political divisions.

Much of the 78-minute speech was given to proclaiming his successful economic policies and extolling his"America first" outlook. US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi appears to rip a copy of President Donald Trumps speech after he delivers the State of the Union address.Meanwhile, he repeatedly condemned the achievements of his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama, and declared that his administration alone had reversed"economic decay" and"restored" American pride.

Seconds after Mr Trump finished, Ms Pelosi, the top Democrat in Congress, ripped up her copy of the speech live on television. That deep frustration will only be exacerbated on Wednesday afternoon in the impeachment vote. "When our president invites and pressures a foreign government to smear a political opponent and corrupt the integrity of our 2020 presidential election, he must be removed from office," Democrat Jeff Merkley said on the Senate floor Wednesday.

US presidential election 'will be won on anti-establishment perceptions' | Sky News AustraliaUS presidential election 'will be won on anti-establishment perceptions' | Sky News AustraliaAn anti-establishment 'mood' helped contribute to Donald Trump's demanding presidential victory in 2016, and that same sentiment will play a crucial role among voters in the upcoming US election, according to the Lowy Institute's Sam Roggeveen. \n\nMr Roggeveen told Sky News he believes the 'mood is still very much anti-establishment,' among western democracies 'generally'. \n\n'I think that's why Brexit succeeded ... [and] I think that's why populist candidates, populist parties have done so well in western Europe'. \n\n'And I think that's why Donald Trump did as well as he did in 2016'. \n\nMr Roggeveen said among the Democratics, the candidate who had 'the clearest anti-establishment credentials' is Bernie Sanders. \n\nConversely, Mr Roggeveen said he believed Joe Biden is perceived as a 'Washington insider' who 'represents an establishment that I think so many Americans feel has let them down'. \n\nMr Roggeveen said his 'sense is that Trump would still be a strong favourite for re-election'. \n\nImage: AP
