US President Donald Trump repeats his offer to state governors to use the National Guard before describing the present tense situation in America as 'the greatest thing that can happen for race relations'.

Trump says current situation in US is 'greatest thing' for race relations

However with a week of at times violent protests having now taken place since the death of African American man George Floyd at the hands of a white Minnesota police officer, the issue of race relations came up, despite Mr Trump speaking about the US' coronavirus recovery. "What has happened to our country and what you now see has been happening is the greatest thing that can happen for race relations, for the African American community, for the Asian American for the Hispanic American, for women, for everything," Mr Trump said.

"I'm suggesting to some of these governors that are too proud ... don't be proud. Get the job done," he said. European Union politicians are expressing concern about US police action linked to the death of George Floyd. "The police should be there to protect, and it is clear that widespread reforms in the law enforcement in the United States are needed."
