Leaders of several Arab states have called for the immediate ceasefire of the war between Israel and Hamas, a move which the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says could be ineffective.
The senior US official held urgent talks with officials from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and a representative from Palestine on Saturday in Jordan’s capital of Amman.

Picture: Jordan Pix / Getty Images “We cannot accept the justification as considered as the right of self-defence, collective punishment,” Mr Shoukry told the media briefing.The issue of the post-war future of the Gaza Strip was also raised by Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.“We don’t have all the variables to even start thinking about that.Mr Blinken said the US supports the implementation of “humanitarian pauses” in order for more aid to reach the besieged enclave which is rapidly running out of basic supplies.
Following the press conference, he reiterated calls for Hamas to release more than 200 Israeli civilians still being held hostage.
