Parched US Southwest region hit by an unusual number of wildfires as rising temperatures have lowered winter snowpacks and allowed fires to start earlier in the year

Destructive Southwest fires have burned dozens of homes in northern Arizona and put numerous small villages in New Mexico in the path of danger, as wind-fueled flames chewed up wide swaths of tinder dry forest and grassland and towering plumes of smoke filled the sky.

"It's heartbreaking, it's terrifying," said Joy Ansley on Friday, a spokeswoman for San Miguel County where the fires are burning. "We're not letting people back in once they come out, it's a very serious, a very grim situation." "There's going to be a lot of homes, buildings impacted, it's a very chaotic situation," Turner said of the Calf Canyon fire.
