A senior US defence official says the Moskva was hit by at least one Neptune missile on Wednesday, rebutting Russia's claim that the boat sank in stormy weather.
A senior US defence official has said the US believes Russian guided-missile cruiser Moskva, which sank in the northern Black Sea this week, was hit by at least one Ukrainian anti-ship missile, as claimed by the Kyiv government.
The official offered no further details beyond saying the US believes the Russians suffered some number of casualties aboard the ship. The Moskva is the biggest Russian warship damaged by enemy fire since 1941, when German dive bombers crippled Soviet battleship Marat in Kronshtadt harbour, according to military analysts.
The ship was thought to be located in the Black Sea somewhere off the Ukrainian port of Odesa at the time of the explosion. Russian officials claimed the damage was the result of a fire on board, later claiming it sank as it was towed back to port in stormy weather following an explosion.
