US presidential candidate Donald Trump has celebrated a major victory after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled the former president has immunity from criminal charges.
The Supreme Court has ruled US presidents are immune from criminal charges related to official acts while in office, a decision celebrated by Donald Trump as he faces trial for allegedly conspiring to overturn the 2020 election.
The highly-anticipated conclusion has been celebrated by the Trump campaign, and the former reality TV star took to social media in all capital letters to praise the court’s finding. Trump was set to stand trial in connection to the January 6, 2021, riots at Capitol Hill, which resulted in nine deaths and more than 1,450 people being charged, including Trump.
US District Judge Tanya Chutkan will have to determine if each action was committed and whether it was completed as a core presidential function, an official act, or an unofficial act. The liberal faction of the Supreme Court bench has condemned the ruling and declared the decision “makes a mockery” of the principle that “no man is above the law”.
