U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will travel to Rhode Island on Tuesday to tour the Washington Bridge and meet with key officials to discuss the reconstruction plan.
McKee said his administration is investigating what led up to the need to shut down and replace the bridge. The cost to demolish and replace the bridge should come in between $250 million and $300 million, he said. The state is looking at a range of sources for the funding including federal grants. The Department of Justice is conducting a separate investigation into the need to suddenly shut down the bridge.The sudden westbound closure in mid-December initially wreaked havoc on traffic, turning a 40- to 45-minute drive into several hours, stranding commuters for hours and sending others veering off their normal path. Some schools closed and held classes remotely.
