Air Line Pilots Association international president Captain Joe DePete, and chair of ALPA’s Spirit Airlines pilot group, Captain Ryan Muller, said the system was being abused. The union has drawn on Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Federal Aviation Administration data showing there are already 1.5 pilots available in the US for every corresponding job.

“Recruitment of Australian pilots with the E3 visa has increased dramatically over the past few months and wait times for E3 interviews in Australia have decreased,” Mr Noorian said.“Many unions recently negotiated enterprise bargaining agreements with the airlines prior to this issue, and that is how they landed favourable pay and working conditions relative to other countries, which is why the US has become so attractive to pilots.
