US warns aging air-traffic control code won't be fixed until 2030

The aging computer system that was behind the grounding of flights across the US last month will need until 2030 to be fully upgraded, the Federal Aviation Administration said, leaving US government leaders questioning why.all domestic aircraft for the first time since the 2001 terrorist attacks when its Notice to Air Mission servers, which provide critical information to pilots and air crews about flight safety or route planning, went down.

Allred pointed out that $29.4 million of the $3 billion was earmarked for NOTAMs modernization, and asked Boulter how much would be required to move the upgrade completion date up to 2025. Boulter didn't have an answer, only saying that such software fell outside his purview. He did note that folks at the FAA"want things to go faster," but that he didn't know what sort of money would be needed to make that happen. When asked if he believed the FAA was happy with its current funding request, Boulter said he believed so, and that any changes would come directly from the FAA.
