The oldest Division I football coach in America is still a blunt, hard-charging boss
Dale Lindsey doesn’t have much special planned for Wednesday. Top on the to-do list for the University of San Diego head football coach will be driving to the office, meeting with his assistants and plotting strategy for spring practice.
Lindsey was raised in Kentucky and played nine seasons in the NFL, all but one with Cleveland. The guy in the locker next to him in Cleveland: hall of fame running back Jim Brown. “I think this is the best job he ever had,” said Eva. “First of all, he became a head coach. I think, for him, it’s personal satisfaction he is capable of putting together a winning program.”
Three former players are SDG&E engineers, which came in handy when Lindsey noticed a big hike in his bill.He said he enjoys coaching college football more than the NFL. As you would expect for an octogenarian, Lindsey is old school. He thinks kickers should have to play a position.
