Toreros outshoot Denver but are derailed by controversial red card
As if it wasn’t already hard enough for the USD men’s soccer game in the NCAA Tournament – playing a Denver team ranked in the top 10 of every poll, at altitude, in a snowstorm – there was also this to deal with: playing much of the game with only 10 men.
Despite creating more goal-scoring chances, the Toreros finally succumbed 1-0 in overtime Thursday afternoon after Del Norte High alum and all-conference midfielder Rhys Gourdie received a questionable red card in the 57Gourdie slid into a Denver player on the icy field but appeared to turn his cleats away and try to avoid contact. Referee Younes Marrakchi initially showed him a yellow card, then, in an instant change of heart, pulled out a red.
Denver scored three minutes into the first OT, when USD goalkeeper Jason Dubrovich saved a point-blank shot but Kengo Ohira slotted in the rebound for the game’s only goal. The Toreros had a shot parried over the bar, another smack off the crossbar and another saved off the line by a Denver defender. They finished with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The Denver area was blanketed with an overnight snowstorm, and the field was cleared shortly before kickoff. But the snow began to fall again, and by overtime the lines on the field were barely distinguishable. Air temperature at kickoff was 24 degrees, with the wind chill in the low teens. Denver , ranked as high as No. 6, advances to the second round Sunday at Duke. USD, which reached the NCAA Tournament by going 6-0-1 in the WCC, ends its season at 8-5-6.
