USD repeatedly gives up the big play in crushing road loss to St. Thomas, a team with too much size for the Toreros

The good news for the University of San Diego football team on Saturday was that it scored 42 points. The bad news was that six touchdowns weren’t enough. On a pleasant, 61-degree afternoon in St. Paul, Minn., USD surrendered big play after big play and suffered a 49-42 loss to St. Thomas.USD gave up a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Toreros allowed a 70-yard run for a score. And the secondary repeatedly gave up huge plays, permitting TD passes of 75, 57, 41 and 36 yards.

The game was a see-saw offensive affair most of the day with neither team leading by more than a touchdown until midway through the fourth quarter when St. Thomas’ Cade Sexauer tossed a 41-yard TD pass, supplying the Tommies with a 49-35 lead. A sixth-year senior, Erickson turned in his second straight excellent performance, completing 33 of 49 passes for 361 yards and three TDs.

Mitchell caught nine passes for 147 yards, including a 73-yard TD. He rushed four times for 62 yards, including a 53-yard score.
