Usman Khawaja survived an injury scare to his previously troublesome left knee to lead Sydney Thunder to a second win from as many starts in this summer’s Big Bash League season., and having also lost his place in the national Test side earlier in the season, Khawaja made 66 from 46 balls as the Thunder beat reigning champions the Melbourne Renegades by six wickets with two balls to spare in front of a modest crowd at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium.
Matt Gilkes was run out off the third ball of the over but Alex Ross drove Gleeson for four through the off-side for the winning runs the following ball. It had been a red-hot start from the Renegades who surged to 0-40 after three overs after captain Finch won the bat flip and elected to bat. A big score loomed but Harper’s innings ended inside five overs as he skied a slower ball from Daniel Sams to point where Ross took a catch to send the gloveman packing for 39 from 21 balls.
