The USWNT has fallen out of the top two of the FIFA Women's World Rankings for the first time since records began in 2003 as Sweden replaced them as the number one team.
Remarkably, only the United States and Germany had ever led the world rankings in 20 years. The two nations have almost exclusively held the top two positions except for six releases of the rankings since 2003. Before today, only Norway, Brazil, England and most recently Sweden, have nudged Germany out of the top two.
Although they remained technically unbeaten during the tournament - stretching their undefeated sequence at the Women's World Cup to a world record 21 matches - they only won one match out of four during the unsuccessful defence of their world title. They had never previously failed to reach the last four of the competition.
