Efforts to increase civic participation on campus are largely student-led. Historically, the university administration has not been publicly engaged in advocacy for on-campus polling locations, and UT does not have a full-time staff member dedicated to increasing voting among students.
On the last day to register to vote for the November 2022 election, organizations in TX Votes’ Civic Engagement Alliance tabled until midnight and collectively registered 1,539 voters. In the fall of 2022, members of TX Votes visited 104 classrooms, providing convenient voter registration, and answering questions from students about what to expect at the polls.
College students deserve access to the ballot box. The members of TX Votes believe that our democracy should be more representative and inclusive of student voices. In recent elections, across the nation, youth voter participation has been at a record high. Without an active university administration that is willing to speak on behalf of students’ interests, it will be up to students alone to sustain these high levels of participation.
