Professors around the country are hearing the message, subtle or harsh, to not hold discussions if it will offend student protesters. They face new incentives to avoid saying true things if protesters will cause trouble for the school, writes UTA professor Morgan Marietta.These are difficult times for anyone who is seeking or speaking the truth. On my campus at the University of Texas at Arlington, facts have less currency than they should, and courage is in short supply.
A few university leaders have spoken with moral clarity about the Hamas attacks, rising antisemitism and the intimidation of Jewish students on campus. Most have not. They are afraid of student protesters, I presume. Afraid of criticism by some of their own faculty. But I think most often they are afraid of negative attention. They have retreated into quashing discussion on campus and restricting the academic liberty of faculty in the false hope of avoiding bad press for their school.
