Utah lawmakers plan to meet this Friday to discuss overriding Gov. Spencer Cox’s expected veto of a bill that would prevent transgender girls from participating in school sports that match their gender identities.
The governor has vowed to veto the bill. Lawmakers believe they have enough support to override the veto.| Updated: 7:06 p.m.
House and Senate Republicans met Monday evening to discuss a potential veto override. Senate Republicans were overwhelmingly in favor of holding a veto override session. The House GOP caucus also seemed inclined to support a veto override attempt, according to legislative sources. The bill, HB11, originally looked to create a commission that would evaluate whether a transgender athlete could participate in a school sport that aligns with their gender identity. That bill, sponsored by state Rep. Kera Birkeland, R-Morgan, was opposed by conservatives and LGBTQ advocates.
McCay added that he believes the House and Senate can each find four votes to flip to gain the two-thirds majority support required to override Cox’s veto of HB11.
