The Utah men's basketball team retired Tom Chambers' jersey at halftime, then rallied after intermission to challenge Oregon but ultimately fell short, 80-77, on Saturday night.
Oregon guard Will Richardson, left, shoots over Utah guard Marco Anthony during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, in Salt Lake City. As this first season under Craig Smith has gotten away from the University of Utah, the Utes have continued to play hard and, in many cases, played up to their competition.
Those facts have never been in question, but it is quite another thing to get over the hump as a result of playing up to your competition. The Utes were unable to do that Saturday night, falling to the University of Oregon, 80-77, at the Huntsman Center on a night when all-time Ute Tom Chambers had his jersey retired at halftime. The key sequence of the second came after Riley Battin’s free throw out of the under-12 media timeout completed a 3-point play to bring Utah to within four at 56-52.
Marco Anthony hit one of two free throws down the other end before Will Richardson knocked down another triple from the left wing with a hand in his face for a 62-53 Oregon lead with 9:21 left. Oregon pushed that lead to 14, Utah got it back down to 7, but Richardson again had an answer, knocking his fifth 3-pointer of the night, this one between the mid-court logo to extend the lead back to 10 at 74-64 with 2:41 left. The Tribune will update this story.
