Chris Packham, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Texas at San Antonio, is...

goes beyond the gushing of armchair astronomers or even most scientists.

The Webb recently used a high-frequency radio transmitter to feed science and engineering data of the galaxy to the NASA Deep Space Network. The agency forwarded the data to the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, which transferred the trove of information to Packham’s colleague and fellow GATOS member David Rosario at the University of Newcastle in England.

The GATOS, which previously observed NGC 5728 with ground-based telescopes, plans to write a scientific report in the coming months. The group and NASA have an agreement that gives them rights to keep the data private for up to a year. “It’s absolutely amazing, but I think all of us in the group feel a level of apprehension because we’ve been preparing for this moment for 25 years,” he said. “While we can’t wait to get the data, we want to make sure we get every ounce of information out of it to get the maximum science out of it.”In a way, Packham, who was born in Billericay, England, near London, is traveling back in time.

His studies have taken him to observe galaxies using telescopes in Hawaii, Spain and Chile while preparing to use the Webb, which had been set to launch in 2018 but didn’t do so until December 2021.
