This lack of oversight contributes to the problem, he continued: “Since we have no clue what is in these pods, we are having to play 'catch-up' and work backwards to see if this is directly related to a specific group of chemicals or is simply one of the side effects of vaping in general.
“There is a common misperception about what is actually occurring during the vaping process,” Dr. Brown told“Vaping devices don’t create harmless water vapor.… When someone vapes, the user inhales these particles, which, depending on their size, reach varying areas of the lungs where they may exert their physiologic effects.
A big problem medical experts are noticing is that many young vapers don't want to acknowledge the inherent risk in vaping. “There seems to be a prevalent ‘not me’ mentality,”, an oncologist with Houston Methodist Cancer Center. "Young people are reading the news that illnesses are being reported, but they still don’t seem to think it will happen to them.”
For those who are addicted to vaping or simply don't want to ditch it, it may be easier to dismiss these cases as just another thing happening in the news — but doctors urge vapers to take the news more personally. "I think the vast majority of people who vape understand that it's not healthy, but just don't realize the true dangers," said Dr. Abulhosn. "They're playing the numbers game and figuring that the chances of something bad happening are slim.… When we say the health hazards of vaping are 'unknown,' it doesn't mean that we don't know if it's good or bad. We know it's very bad and very harmful.
