Men have consistently made up the majority of drownings in Australia but as summer holidays get underway, there's a growing focus on reducing these avoidable deaths.
Life savers say calling for help should be the first thing you do if you see someone struggling in the water.Eighty-two per cent of people who drown in Australia are male, according to the National Drowning Report .
But while the circumstances around drownings like these vary, there is one factor linking the vast majority of them. "Also men tend to take on activities like boating, fishing and kayaking, and they don't wear life jackets."ABC Gold Coast: Dominic CansdaleUniversity of Southern Queensland drowning prevention researcher Shayne Baker said a generally healthier aging population had also contributed to the trend.
Dr Baker said he had seen relatively fit people get "out of their depths" and drown within two minutes."When people realised they were in trouble, they would tend to fight, they would try to get to a point of safety.")With more than a third of drowning deaths usually occurring over summer holidays, Dr Baker said prevention must involve families.
