What Vegeta says matters.
A longstanding joke in the Dragon Ball community is that Vegeta, despite being a former villain, becomes a better father than Goku after Trunks is born. Although there are some examples that suggest Goku may have been a good father to Gohan, overall, Vegeta has proven to be a better father figure for Trunks. However, what many fans ignore is that Vegeta's future father-of-the-year tendencies date back a lot earlier than Trunks was born, as proved by the Dragon Ball Z anime.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In episode #68 of Dragon Ball Z, Vegeta goes off on Goku for failing to kill the defeated members of the Ginyu Force, Recoome and Burter, by telling him that they wouldn't have shown Gohan any mercy if Goku should have arrived ten minutes later. Vegeta also presents another possibility.
Vegeta Foreshadowed His Good Father Tendencies On Namek In the manga, the Saiyan Prince only spoke about Goku's softness, shamed him for letting Jace escape, and mentioned that there was no way Goku could be a Super Saiyan. However, by adding these additional comments from Vegeta, the anime positioned the Saiyan Prince as a character who was able to think of how one's actions could affect others and showed to actually care about Gohan's fate.
Although Vegeta was able to foresee the horrible things that could have happened to Gohan, an argument could be made that he only saw that as detrimental to his own battle against Frieza and his goons. However, Vegeta was able to foresee these horrible possibilities because he was just like the characters he was condemning, a ruthless villain capable of everything.
Vegeta's Retcon Helps With His Later Transformation Of course, Vegeta was still evil by this point in the series and would soon abandon Goku upon Captain Ginyu's arrival. Even when Vegeta became a father and sided with Goku, he still had a lot to learn about being a genuinely good person, let alone a father. Still, an evil Vegeta was still capable of putting specific ideas into perspective that a father should be able to do on their own, which Goku notably didn't.
