Verstappen believed he would win the 2022 F1 championship following July's French GP, the 12th round of the season.
Verstappen wrapped up his second F1 drivers' crown with victory in Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix, moving into an unassailable points lead with four races remaining.
Leclerc retired while leading in both Spain and Azerbaijan due to issues with his car, but was fully responsible for the error that saw him spin off while out front at the French GP. Reflecting on his title win after the race at Suzuka, Verstappen said there were"a few moments where I thought we have a good chance" of winning the championship.
"The moment where I thought now we are going to win it was I think after Paul Ricard, where the lead increased by quite a bit," said Verstappen.
