Anthony Albanese has told Sky News that he is “very confident” Australians will show “fairness and respect” when considering indigenous constitutional recognition as the government marches towards a referendum on the Voice to Parliament.

The Voice to Parliament was a key element of the 2017 Uluru Statement from the Heart and called for an elected Indigenous advisory body to the Federal Parliament. In his speech to mark the opening of the four-day cultural event, Mr Albanese outlined the draft question for a future referendum, which he said needed to be a “simple principle”.

The Prime Minister also unveiled the proposed wording for three sentences to be added into the constitution. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice may make representations to parliament and the executive government on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. “When a government listens to people with experience, with earned knowledge of kinship and country and culture and community when we trust in the value of self-determination and empowerment, then the policies and programs are always more effective,” he said during his speech.

Mr Albanese also used the speech to clarify concerns about how the Voice to Parliament would operate within the confines of the existing Australian Government.
