has spoken briefly in Washington DC after pleading not guilty to four federal charges stemming from his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
"This is the persecution of the person that's leading by very, very substantial numbers in the Republican primary and leading Biden by a lot, so if you can't beat him you prosecute him.Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhyaya scheduled the next hearing in the election subversion case for August 28.Prosecutor Thomas Windom said the government was available on all of the days that the magistrate judge offered as potential hearing days, but would prefer the earliest one.
Trump has said he did nothing wrong and has accused special counsel Jack Smith of trying to thwart his chances of returning to the White House in 2024.Trump's motorcade makes its way through DC. The indictment chronicles how Trump and his Republican allies, in what Smith described as an attack on a "bedrock function of the US government", repeatedly lied about the results in the two months after he lost the election and pressured his vice president, Mike Pence, and state election officials to take action to help him cling to power.
