Longstanding weatherman Paul Burt has issued a blunt final message to Channel Seven viewers during an on-air piece to camera after the network sacked him as part of a slate of redundancies at the network.

Reporting from the Gold Coast during his final segment on Friday evening, Burt echoed the same sentiment expressed by colleagues in his final sign off after the shock news he said made him “instantly ill”. The segment then cut to a montage of Burt’s presentations through the years, accompanied by the Crowded House song “Always Take the Weather”.
Burt said he still loved the network, and while the channel still aired his lifestyle program Step Outside with Paul Burt, he said there was “no leniency … no discussion” surrounding his axing.Burt described his feeling of initial “shock”, then “embarrassment” that it had been reported in the media.The veteran presenter said the media was a “changing industry for sure”, after working for rival network Channel Nine before joining Channel Seven in 2013.
Burt said he did not think it was the end of the “golden era” of television, but that digital media had been “taking a fair chunk” of the viewership while the country was “doing it tough”.
