A veterans' group in regional NSW is searching for stories of First Nations soldiers who fought for Australia to finally give them the recognition they deserve.
Learning about her ancestors' connection to the Anzac spirit has brought a sense of pride for Aunty Cheryl Penrith.
"It makes me feel really proud to think about how brave and courageous they must've been to take that step to actually sign up to go to war."The Wiradjuri elder's great-grandfather Alfred Jackson "Happy Jack" Coombs and his brother William Coombs signed up for the First World War when they were teenagers growing up in the NSW Murray region.
Many know the stories of the Anzacs, but Aunty Cheryl believes Australia would be shocked to learn how many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men fought for their country and have not been included in the history of war. Snowy Valleys Heroes, a veteran's group in Tumut, set out to write a book to commemorate every person from their region who served in war since 1854.
