VFX artists are marveling at Disney's first photoreal CGI movie, even in spite of the fact that it is filled with dated technology and shots.
It may be possible to link Disney's photorealistic CGI movies to one film that came out 23 years ago: Dinosaur. Released in 2000, Dinosaur explores the life of a lone dinosaur as he tries to protect his family of lemurs after asteroids strike. It is a dark premise for a children's movie, which contributed to the film's middling $349 million worldwide take against its $127.5 million budget. What still makes Dinosaur stand out today is its animation.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT From 0:45 to 8:26, the group notes the impressive animation and the inclusion of real-world grass in Dinosaur. While identifying some of the failures in shadowing, they praise the hair and grass in the production and explained the fascinating techniques that Disney and The Secret Lab put to use. Dinosaur was CGI-animated, but some real-world shots were included with the use of red screen technology and other clever animation tricks.
