We chat with OuterBanks VFX supervisor Art Codron (FuseFX) about the physics behind season 3's visuals and how the challenge compares to his work on TheRookie:
Warning: SPOILERS for Outer Banks Season 3.Renewed for a fourth season ahead of its recent release, Outer Banks season 3 is currently available to stream on Netflix. The latest batch of episodes continued to focus on the treasure hunt and brought the series-long mystery to a close with the discovery of El Dorado. However, with an eighteen-month time jump and a new adventure on the horizon, there's likely to be plenty in store when the show returns.
Art Codron: I did not know much about the show going into it. I was, however, amazed at its popularity once I paid attention. People would ask me what I was working on, and when I said Outer Banks, it was more often than not met with “I love that show!” I plan to stream the episodes when I get some time off to do so.
What kind of background research was required to accurately portray the crash? You’ve worked on several different projects, so have you imitated anything like this before? Art Codron: The physics is very time-consuming. Despite having specialists that run the simulations, many versions are necessary. It’s a lot of trial and error. We were averaging around 25 or so for each shot, with additional supplemental sims run on top of that. Oftentimes we will be in a good place, but we will go in and add a little extra splash in a certain place to make it even more dramatic.
Can you shed some light on those scenes in the El Dorado Caves? How much of that was real, and how much was special effects? Art Codron: The Rookie is different in that, in addition to being a procedural, it is an episodic show with a much tighter schedule. While we have done some really cool fun stuff for The Rookie, crashing a seaplane would be a tall order, given their schedule. Streaming shows like Outer Banks have longer schedules and afford you the luxury of doing much bigger visual effects gags. With Outer Banks, you usually have weeks to achieve bigger gags, whereas on The Rookie, we usually only have days.
