The Victorian government has rejected calls to delay the introduction of public drunkenness reforms, set to take effect on Melbourne Cup Day – one of the booziest days of the year.
Victoria Police are set to be stripped of powers to arrest people for being drunk in public on November 7, due to the state government’s long-planned decriminalising reforms.
The Victorian government is pushing ahead with it's decriminalisation of public drunkenness, which will take effect on Melbourne Cup Day - one of the booziest days of the year. Picture: Craig Borrow, News Limited On Sunday, the Victorian opposition accused the Labor government of rushing the implementation of the reforms and called for the change to be “delayed until there is an adequate health response in place”.
“Sadly, this is characteristic of the overall handling of this reform, which has lurched from ill considered to woefully under prepared,” Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt said. Under the reforms, police will no longer have the power to arrest people solely for being intoxicated in public.
