Albanese called the incoming CDF “a proven leader with the experience, intellect and resolve to lead the ADF in a complex and rapidly changing global strategic environment”. Richard Marles described Johnston, who has been vice chief since 2018, as having been “in the engine room” of defence’s work on both culture and capability since the Albanese government took office in 2022.
