Guilt, tough conversations, tears and sometimes even redemption. Restorative justice — the process within which victims, or the families of victims, meet with their imprisoned assailants in the hope of some sort of closure — is a ripe subject for TV. It’s the reason I was intrigued by, ITVX’s latest offering, in the first place… and why I was so disappointed when it abandoned the entire notion at the end of the first episode.

The man who killed Maisie, Charles Stone , is behind bars, having admitted to killing her during his trial. We hear his voice before we see his face, in an audio recording sent to Stella and Paul asking for a meeting so he can explain what happened and explain why he was found standing over the teenage girl’s body that fateful night.

But haunted by scenes of the night of Maisie’s death, Stella eventually goes behind Paul’s back to meet with the killer. It doesn’t go well. After admonishing Stella for being out drinking rather than staying in with her daughter, Charles tells her that he had nothing to do with her murder, that he had been set up to be at the scene, and that another girl, currently missing, was connected to Maisie’s death.
