John Chambers was sentenced to more than 10 years in prison following a court hearing.
A man who was sexually abused by the former Paper Lace guitarist John Chambers as a young boy has slammed the Government's "ridiculous" decision to deny him compensation. A Government authority exists to consider compensation claims from victims of crime such as sexual and physical abuse, but Chambers' victim has been denied any money in a decision which he says he is struggling to absorb.
Chambers, who was 73 at the time of his court conviction last year, plied his victim with alcohol and Chinese takeaways at the height of his fame with the Nottinghamshire-based band in the 1980s. The sexual abuse went on for years before the Chambers' victim eventually left Nottinghamshire, later reporting the crimes to police in 2017.
It is for this reason that the man says his CICA claim was rejected. The Ministry of Justice did not dispute that this was the reason for the claim being rejected, nor did they dispute the details of the man's conviction. This rule was strengthened in 2012 to prevent individuals who have committed serious illegal acts from benefitting from state-funded compensation, with the Supreme Court recently ruling that this rule was fair and proportionate. Outlining how it deals with unspent convictions, the Government says: "Where we are able to consider a reduction under the scheme, we will consider all the circumstances of your claim and use a points system to enhance consistency in our decision-making.
"That is why our compensation scheme is one of the most generous in the world – paying out over £173 million to victims of violent crime last year. It is also why we are quadrupling funding for victim support services compared to 2010."
