A bushfire in Victoria's Otway region has prompted evacuations, including from the Blanket Bay Campground. While the fire is now under control, authorities warn against returning to affected areas. The Grampians National Park is also gradually reopening after a major bushfire.
Residents and holidaymakers in Victoria ’s Otway region have been forced to evacuate after a bushfire developed early on Wednesday morning. Firefighters have been battling a blaze on Blanket Bay Rd, Cape Otway travelling towards Lighthouse Rd. It has since been brought under control however a warning was issued by VicEmergency urging campers at the Blanket Bay Campground to leave immediately.
While the warning has now been downgraded those who did not leave have now been told it is too unsafe to do so, while those who have left should not yet return. “If you left Blanket Bay Campground, it is not safe to return,” VicEmergency said. “Be aware of potential dangerous bushfire and tree hazards.” A relief centre is open at Apollo Bay Community Hall on Pengilley Ave. Residents in Glenaire and Hordern Vale have been told to stay alert and monitor for conditions. The owner of Cape Otway camping ground Bimbi Park said he told all of his guests to leave at 3am and they did so in under an hour. “They were great,” Frank Fotinas said in a video posted to social media. Fotinas said he was a little concerned about the fire but was going to stay behind to help. “As soon as we see it getting too close we’re gonna leave,” he said. There are no fire bans in place across the state however a high fire danger rating has been issued on Saturday for the Wimmera and South West regions. The Grampians National Park will start reopening to visitors after a long-running bushfire blackened vast swathes of the landscape. The blaze has burned 76,000 ha since it was sparked on December 17 by dry lightning strikes in the southern part of the Grampians National Park, in Victoria’s northwest.
