Sky News Australia can reveal up to 90 non-executive staff may receive redundancy payments of up to $50,000 each as part of an agreement between the Andrews government and union officials.
Sources close to negotiations between the government agency set up to run the games and its departing staff have told Sky News Australia that there is “disagreement” between an offer on the table for entitlement payouts worth thousands of dollars.
Executive officers of the Victoria 2026 organisation, overseen by former COVID-19 Commander Jeroen Weimar, may receive greater payments reflecting a notice period of up to four months. Victoria's Shadow Minister for the Commonwealth Games David Southwick told Sky News Australia the negotiations and potential payments are only a small portion of the amount the Andrews Government may need to pay for its decision.
The revelations come as Canada delivered another blow to the Commonwealth Games movement, with Alberta pulling the plug on its plans to bid for the 2030 event. Victoria walked away from its contract to host the games in 20-26 for the same reason just weeks earlier, although Premier Daniel Andrews said the costs could be much higher .
